Program Overview

The Community Outreach & Leadership Track (COLT) is a program for PGY1 and PGY2 Geisinger residents in training in Internal Medicine, Med-Peds, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine. The goal of the program is to create physician community leaders who are actively engaged in Danville and the surrounding communities.  Specifically, the program helps participants understand the value of community leadership and exposes them to new elements of the community, and community service.  Through professional development programming built into the course, also assists them in developing organizational leadership competencies such as engagement through trust, listening and emotional intelligence, and coaching and leading change.

Dates/Location/Content

• 8 sessions, each session alternating between leadership topics and community topics from February (start) to September (conclusion)
• held the fourth Thursday of the month, 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm
  • 2024 dates include:
    • February 29, 2024 - Leading through Engagement: Trust and Listening (L)
    • March 28, 2024 - Philanthropy and Volunteerism (C)
    • April 25, 2024 - Leading through Engagement: Emotional Intelligence and Crucial Conversations (L)
    • May 30, 2024 - Economic and Workforce Development (C)
    • June 27, 2024 - Coaching for Performance and Development (L)
    • July 25, 2024 - Poverty and Human Services (C)
    • August 29, 2024- Leading Change (L)
    • September 26, 2024 - Education (C)
• Locations alternate between Geisinger facilities in Danville and businesses/organizations in Danville, PA.
• Some prework is required prior to the leadership sessions

Community Projects

All participants join a small group of class peers (2-3 teams, maximum) to identify, develop, and complete a community project before graduation. Groups include a mix of internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, and medicine-pediatrics resident participants.  The Foundation assists participants in making community connections for successful projects. Project selection coaching and facilitation are built into Community (C) program sessions.  Projects are presented toward the program's conclusion at special, to-be-determined events.  Learn more about COLT Community Service Guidelines and project expectations,.

Timeline

February 2nd - Deadline for application submission (submit paper applications to foundation@columbiamontourchamber.com, or complete an online application, linked below.)

February 9th - Selection deadline for committee and notification of selected track residents

February - September - Content delivery, small group projects

September - December - Graduation & project presentations

Community Engagement - New in 2024

Special invitations are extended to all COLT participants for Chamber and Chamber Foundation events in Danville and the surrounding communities, especially Chamber Business After Hours networking events (monthly, evenings, 3rd Wednesday of the month) and the annual Nonprofit Mixer (August).
